{"id":1880,"date":"2017-02-17T12:42:48","date_gmt":"2017-02-17T12:42:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dosde.com\/blog\/?p=230\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T08:10:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T08:10:51","slug":"casa-botines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pre.dosde.com\/en\/casa-botines\/","title":{"rendered":"Casa Botines"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>History of Casa Botines<\/h2>\n<p>The project for the construction of a <strong>building for a business and residences in the centre of Le\u00f3n<\/strong> was entrusted to Gaud\u00ed in 1891 by the textile company Fern\u00e1ndez y Andr\u00e9s, who had a business relationship with Catalan entrepreneur Eusebi G\u00fcell, the architect\u2019s patron.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The building is known as &#8220;Casa Botines&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>due to the Castilian version of the second surname of the company\u2019s founder, Catalan Joan Homs i Botin\u00e0s. On his death, two of his employees, Sim\u00f3n Fern\u00e1ndez and Mariano Andr\u00e9s, kept the business on and decided to con struct a new headquarters on the site of San Marcelo Square.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>At that time, Antoni Gaud\u00ed was working on the Episcopal Palace in Astorga<\/strong>, a city which is about 50 kilometres from Le\u00f3n, and took up the commission due to the proximity of the two projects. The construction work started in January 1892 and was completed in the record time of ten months.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Commercial and residential use<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/fachada-casa-botines-leon-gaudi-dosde-publishing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-777 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/fachada-casa-botines-leon-gaudi-dosde-publishing.jpg\" alt=\"Fa\u00e7ade Casa Botines Antoni Gaud\u00ed\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Built on a site of trapezoidal shape and facing the four points of the compass, Casa Botines combined commercial and residential use. <strong>The semi-basement and the ground floor were used as offices<\/strong>, shop and warehouses for the business of Fern\u00e1ndez and Andr\u00e9s; the main floor was divided into two residences \u2013one for each owner\u2013 and <strong>the two upper floors each hold four rented apartments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>To separate public use from private use, Gaud\u00ed devised four doorways, one on each fa\u00e7ade<\/strong>. The one which looked out on to the square provided access to the shop and offices, the rear one to the warehouse, and the two side ones led through to staircases which the residents used to reach their apartments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To top the attic, where the porter resided, Gaud\u00ed carried through an idea that he wasn\u2019t able to complete in the Episcopal Palace of Astorga: a roof that had four very steep slopes with six skylights that provided insulation, illumination and ventilation by means of glass claraboyas raised a few centimetres off the roof.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Casa Botines exterior<\/h2>\n<p>[metaslider id=1284]<\/p>\n<p><strong>In order to blend his project into the architectonic context of Le\u00f3n<\/strong>, Gaud\u00ed studied the city\u2019s cathedral, convents and basilicas, as well as the Guzmanes Palace adjacent to the Casa Botines site. For this reason and for the stylistic continuity with the neighbouring and contemporary work of the Episcopal Palace of Astorga, <strong>the artist opted for the neo-Gothic style<\/strong>, with the use of lobulated arches on doors and windows.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gaud\u00ed softened the rigidity of the polyhedral shape of the building by emphasizing horizontality and chromatically framing the fa\u00e7ade with the dark shaded slate on the roof and the railing around the trench. The corner towers and their stylised toppings act as a vertical counterpoint and give the property this magic and heterodox feel that is so typical of Gaud\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dosde.com\/en\/books\/antoni-gaudi.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3643\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Boton-descubrir-mas-EN.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>A very functional interior<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/escalera-interior-casa-botines-leon-gaudi-dosde-publishing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-778 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/escalera-interior-casa-botines-leon-gaudi-dosde-publishing.jpg\" alt=\"Stairwells fo Casa Botines Antoni Gaudi\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the floors for commercial use of Casa Botines, <strong>Gaud\u00ed applied, for the first time, the so-called open plan design<\/strong>, a solution way ahead of the model used massively throughout the 20th century for offices and superstores. The architect <strong>dispensed with the usual thick load-bearing walls<\/strong> and substituted them for 28 slender cast iron pillars measuring only 20 cm in diameter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This structure created a diaphanous feel on the ground floor and basement, allowing a greater flexibility in the distribution of space. With identical rationality, the architect worked on the interior arrangement of the floors dividing the surface area of the building into 96 modules (the long fa\u00e7ades into 12 parts and the short ones into eight). The resultant reticular helped him arrange the pillars, line up the walls and determine the shape of the patio wells and the stairwells.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The most complete visual book on Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s work<\/h2>\n<p>Antoni Gaud\u00ed was one of the most versatile architects and creators of the 19th century, recognized almost anywhere in the world. His works have a sign and identity of their own.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The book &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dosde.com\/en\/gaudi-complete-work-avant-garde-deluxe.html\">The Complete Work of Antoni Gaud\u00ed<\/a>&#8221; closely explores the works that Antoni Gaud\u00ed carried out during his life, from his most emblematic works to his lesser known projects.
