{"id":1888,"date":"2017-02-17T13:09:08","date_gmt":"2017-02-17T13:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dosde.com\/blog\/?p=251\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T08:06:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T08:06:54","slug":"cathedral-of-mallorca","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pre.dosde.com\/en\/cathedral-of-mallorca\/","title":{"rendered":"The Mallorca Cathedral"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Gaud\u00ed and the Mallorca cathedral<\/h2>\n<p>Towards the end of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, <strong>Bishop Pere Campins was behind the refurbishment of the internal layout and the decoration of the Mallorca\u00a0cathedral<\/strong>, which had been built between the 13<sup>th<\/sup> and 14<sup>th<\/sup> centuries. Disappointed by proposals from diocesan architects, in 1899 Campins travelled to Barcelona to ask for Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s advice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The ideas of the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dosde.com\/en\/books\/sagrada-familia.html\">the Sagrada Familia<\/a>, who at that time got on well with several ecclesiastics of great intellectual stature, greatly enthused the bishop, who immediately <strong>proposed Gaud\u00ed with personally taking charge of the restoration<\/strong>. Spurred on by the idea of leaving his mark on the medieval cathedral, Gaud\u00ed accepted the offer, planning a refurbishment that, despite being unfinished, had the strong character of its creator, while integrating perfectly into the Gothic substrate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>A new distribution<\/h2>\n<p>[metaslider id=1278]<\/p>\n<p>In 1903, <strong>Gaud\u00ed presented a substantial restoration project of the Mallorca cathedral to Bishop Campins.<\/strong> Amongst the work he undertook, the changes causing the most impact on the cathedral\u2019s configuration was <strong>the dismantling of two altarpieces that had blocked the congregation\u2019s vision of the bishop\u2019s throne<\/strong>, the location of the high altar in front of the mentioned throne, the positioning of a baldachino over the altar, the moving of the choir stand from the central nave to the presbytery, the restoration of two pulpits \u2013only one of which now remains\u2013, the recuperation of bricked up windows, the design of nine stained glass windows and diverse furniture, new lighting and ornamental wrought iron work, ceramic and paintings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1914, Gaud\u00ed left the project of the Mallorca cathedral\u00a0<strong>unfinished due to quarrels with the contractor and the death of the Bishop<\/strong>, his great ally.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>A space for prayer<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/altar-mayor-catedral-de-mallorca-gaudi-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-681 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/altar-mayor-catedral-de-mallorca-gaudi-1.jpg\" alt=\"The High Altar of the Mallorca Cathedral Dosde Publishing\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Faithful to his way of viewing art, <strong>Gaud\u00ed imagined a cathedral full of light, colour and delicate decorative details<\/strong> that would help create the ideal atmosphere for prayer. In order to increase natural light, the architect opened the unfinished windows that were filled in, and planned nine stained glass windows with phrases from the litanies of the Virgin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In order to achieve artificial light, he designed dozens of candelabras and wrought iron lamps such as those that cling to the shafts of all of the columns in the temple. <strong>The Mallorcan blacksmiths<\/strong> also forged the gate of the presbytery and <strong>made delicate golden insertions of ritual phrases on the bishop throne\u2019s wall<\/strong>, while Josep Maria Jujol, who worked alongside Gaud\u00ed, painted some of the choir pews vibrant colours, though the result was not appreciated by the priests, who put a halt to this change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dosde.com\/en\/books\/antoni-gaudi.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3643\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Boton-descubrir-mas-EN.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The baldachino and the high altar of the Mallorca cathedral<\/h2>\n<p>[metaslider id=1279]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gaud\u00ed took upon dignifying the altar with the collocation of a baldachino<\/strong>, an enormous heptagonal crown on whose vertex the architect put a sculptural arrangement with Jesus Christ on the cross and the Virgin and Saint John at his feet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From the crown hang 35 brass lamps that light up the altar, while over it Gaud\u00ed hangs a brocade tapestry of eucharist theme that obliquely projects over Christ\u2019s followers. <strong>The present baldachino is actually a provisional same-sized model<\/strong>, made from ephemeral material, such as card, paper, wire and wood. The final structure never got to be made.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The most complete book on Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s work<\/h2>\n<p>Antoni Gaud\u00ed was considered one of the most important architects in history.
