{"id":1894,"date":"2017-02-20T10:00:52","date_gmt":"2017-02-20T10:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dosde.com\/blog\/?p=288\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T08:06:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T08:06:05","slug":"the-teresian-college-of-barcelona","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pre.dosde.com\/en\/the-teresian-college-of-barcelona\/","title":{"rendered":"The Teresian College of Barcelona"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Gaud\u00ed and the Teresian College of Barcelona<\/h2>\n<p>In 1889, Enric d\u2019Oss\u00f3, founder of the Teresian Congregation, <strong>commissioned Gaud\u00ed to continue the project<\/strong> of a large building in the village of Sant Gervasi de Cassoles \u2013absorbed by Barcelona a few years later\u2013 in order to accommodate <strong>a female boarding college, the headquarters of the congregation and a study house<\/strong> for the nuns: <strong>the Teresian College of Barcelona.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The former architect left Gaud\u00ed with the foundations and about 80 centimetres of wall built, and the latter accepted Oss\u00f3\u2019s conditions: <strong>a tight budget in line with the congregation\u2019s vow of poverty<\/strong> which contrasted with the opulence of the projects commissioned by G\u00fcell. Despite the financial constraints of the project, the artist does not abandon his architecture imaginative constructive ideas and manages to design a work marked by symbolism.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Fa\u00e7ade with medieval styles<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/fechada-colegio-teresiano-gaudi-barcelona.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-656 size-full\" title=\"fachada colegio teresiano gaudi barcelona\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/fechada-colegio-teresiano-gaudi-barcelona.jpg\" alt=\"Facade of the Teresian College of Barcelona, by Antoni Gaud\u00ed\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>For the Teresian College of Barcelona, Gaud\u00ed planned a building of rectangular ground plan<\/strong>, with a ground floor, three floors and an accessible roof. On the fa\u00e7ades, he bordered stone walls with lines of brickwork and broke up the continuity of the windows \u2013a deliberate modular repetition\u2013 with two attached central bodies: the portico, on the main fa\u00e7ade, and the domestic service area, at the rear. It is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/en\/five-lesser-known-works-by-gaudi\/\">the 5 lesser known works of Gaud\u00ed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The crenellations that top the fa\u00e7ade and <strong>the pinnacles that decorate the towers on the four corners give a medieval air to the work<\/strong>, reinforced by the Mudejar lattice work on the portico and the vertical sensation of the large windows. To compensate for the simplicity of materials, Gaud\u00ed juggled around with the plans in order to achieve a contrast between light and shadow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Homage to Saint Teresa<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/portal-colegio-teresiano-gaudi-barcelona.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-657 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/portal-colegio-teresiano-gaudi-barcelona.jpg\" alt=\"Gate of the Teresian College of Barcelona, by Antoni Gaud\u00ed\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Always eager to provide meaning to the decoration of his projects, Gaud\u00ed included symbolism of secular character, relating to the place of construction, the developer\u2019s identity, local history or \u2013according to the case\u2013 to emblems of Catholicism. The walls and <strong>construction details of the Teresian College<\/strong> are particularly laden with religious references due to <strong>the architect&#8217;s admiration for the Saint&#8217;s work<\/strong>. Her carved figure in the Church of Santa Maria de la Victoria in Rome by the great Italian Renaissance artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini must also have influenced Gaud\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Examples of this propensity to use symbolism is <strong>the abundant use of the initial \u201cT\u201d that stands for the Saint&#8217;s name<\/strong> that can be seen depicted amongst crenellations and <strong>used in the door handles&#8217; shape<\/strong>, the use of the monogram JHS (Jesus, Saviour of Mankind) on the fa\u00e7ade or the allegory of Mont Carmel on the gateway.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dosde.com\/en\/books\/antoni-gaudi.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3643\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Boton-descubrir-mas-EN.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The interior of the Teresian College<\/h2>\n<p>[metaslider id=1277]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gaud\u00ed took advantage of the load-bearing potential of the catenary archway throughout the inside<\/strong> of the building. On the ground floor, the parabolic shapes of the mentioned arches are truncated by the roof, turning into a narrow series of brick corbels only interrupted by the far ends of the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the first floor, in contrast, the arches go uninterruptedly down the corridor, creating a play of light and shadows that can be considered as some of the greatest achievements by the architect in the field of the treatment of natural light.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The most complete book on Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s work<\/h2>\n<p>Antoni Gaud\u00ed was considered one of the most important architects in history.
