Owing to its artistic value, the auditorium was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The history of the Palau de la M\u00fasica<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/columnas-modernistas-palau-de-la-musica-barcelona-dosde-publishing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-606 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/columnas-modernistas-palau-de-la-musica-barcelona-dosde-publishing.jpg\" alt=\"Columns with mosaics in the Palau de la M\u00fasica de Barcelona\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Initially comprised of a male choir, the Orfe\u00f3 Catal\u00e0 grew rapidly after its foundation in 1891, incorporating female and children sections and started reaping significant successes within the music scene.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the year 1904, the board of the choral society, then directed by the influential jeweller Joaquim Cabot, decided that the time had come to give the Orfe\u00f3 its own headquarters and auditorium, which led to the acquisition of a small, irregular plot of land in the Sant Pere neighbourhood, one of the most densely populated areas of Barcelona\u2019s old part of town.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To carry out this project, those in charge of the entity turned to the talent and skills of <strong>Llu\u00eds Dom\u00e8nech i Montaner, an architect that was well-known for his compromise with the Catalanism movement<\/strong> coupled with his in-depth knowledge of cultural traditions. In total harmony with the developers of the work, Dom\u00e8nech conjured up a building, the Catalan Music Palace, with <strong>a striking and original design, which reflected both the rebirth of Catalan culture<\/strong> that was advocated by the Orfe\u00f3 and the steady rise of a Barcelonan bourgeoisie keen to equip itself with a new identity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dosde.com\/en\/books\/modernisme.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3643\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Boton-descubrir-mas-EN.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>A breath-taking exterior<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/escultura-exterior-palau-de-la-musica-barcelona-dosde-publishing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-603 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/escultura-exterior-palau-de-la-musica-barcelona-dosde-publishing.jpg\" alt=\"Sculptures on the facade of the Palau de la M\u00fasica de Barcelona\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The site on which the Palau de la M\u00fasica Catalana was built was actually amidst very narrow streets, a fact that meant it was rather difficult to get a good perspective of the building. Aware of this problem, Dom\u00e8nech used a similar distribution on the two visible fa\u00e7ades of the building, by developing a sequence of <strong>balconies, columns and windows to generate a feeling of continuity<\/strong> that was also reinforced by the use of bare, red brickwork, glass and ceramic work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, where the two fa\u00e7ades intersect, the architect devised <strong>a striking, sculptural arrangement with reference to traditional Catalan folk music<\/strong>. This was Dom\u00e8nech\u2019s way of paying homage to the origins of the Orfe\u00f3 Catal\u00e0 and, at the same time, a means of highlighting the presence of the main floor, which without this decoration would have gone unnoticed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Exuberant decoration<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/escalera-palau-de-la-musica-barcelona-dosde-publishing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-611 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/escalera-palau-de-la-musica-barcelona-dosde-publishing.jpg\" alt=\"Staircase of the Palau de la M\u00fasica of Barcelona\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The amazing design of the exterior of the Palau de la M\u00fasica corresponds to the sheer majesty of the interior spaces. <strong>The constant use by Dom\u00e8nech of floral decoration<\/strong> converted the inside of the Palau de la M\u00fasica into an explosion of joy and vitality.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This sensation of optimism was highlighted even further by the wide chromatic palette used, one of the signs of identity of modernist architecture. The culmination of the decorative programme planned by the architect is <strong>the inverted stained glass dome<\/strong> (work of Antoni Rigalt and Jeroni Granell\u2019s workshop)<strong> in the concert hall.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Palau de la M\u00fasica concert hall<\/h2>\n<p>[metaslider id=1270]<\/p>\n<p>To host the recitals of the Orfe\u00f3 Catal\u00e0, Dom\u00e8nech designed a large, oval auditorium floor with an orchestra and two floors, <strong>able to hold around 2,000 spectators<\/strong>. Bathed in natural light from the exterior thanks to the pioneering use of the curtain wall, the space meant that optimum acoustics could be obtained.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Added to its functional design was the most splendid decoration, in which Dom\u00e8nech <strong>combined with total expressive freedom the glass and ceramic surfaces with sculptures<\/strong> of allegorical character, such as the maidens and Valkyries sculpted by D\u00eddac Masana and Pablo Gargallo that decorate the proscenium.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The book to discover the beauty of Modernisme<\/h2>\n<p>Developed in the late 19th Modernisme\u00a0took its inspiration from the great book of nature\u00a0to create works of an exceptional beauty, embracing\u00a0different areas: <strong>architecture, painting, sculpture, decoration and jewellery<\/strong>. It\u00a0reached its climax in Barcelona, where the buildings created by architects such as Gaud\u00ed, Dom\u00e8nech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch transformed the city.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0more than <strong>300 stunning photographs<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dosde.com\/en\/modernisme-artistic-movement-photo.html\">this book explores Modernisme<\/a> in all its areas. Its exceptional pictures show in total detail\u00a0the most creative modernist works\u00a0of this movement.
