{"id":1897,"date":"2017-02-20T10:09:55","date_gmt":"2017-02-20T10:09:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dosde.com\/blog\/?p=295\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T08:02:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T08:02:51","slug":"guell-crypt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pre.dosde.com\/fr\/guell-crypt\/","title":{"rendered":"G\u00fcell Crypt"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What is the G\u00fcell Crypt?<\/h2>\n<p>Located in the municipality of Santa Coloma de Cervell\u00f3, a few kilometres outside Barcelona, <strong>the G\u00fcell Crypt is a key work in Antoni Gaud\u00ed&rsquo;s career<\/strong>, given that it <strong>anticipates many of the construction solutions<\/strong> that the modernist architect would <strong>employ in the Sagrada Familia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that it is an unfinished work, this religious temple has great historical and artistic value, as evidenced by its inclusion in 2005 on the list of Unesco World Heritage Sites.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>G\u00fcell Crypt is amongst one of the numerous works that Gaud\u00ed carried out for the entrepreneur Eusebi G\u00fcell<\/strong>, with whom he collaborated throughour his life, carrying out works as well known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dosde.com\/en\/guell-palace-avant-garde-visual.html\">G\u00fcell Palace<\/a> or Park G\u00fcell.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>History of the G\u00fcell Grypt<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Cripta-Gu%CC%88ell-colonia-guell-portal-acceso.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-649 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Cripta-Gu%CC%88ell-colonia-guell-portal-acceso.jpg\" alt=\"Main entrance of G\u00fcell Crypt, by Antoni Gaud\u00ed\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With the construction of a textile factory in the locality of Santa Coloma de Cervell\u00f3, the industrialist Eusebi G\u00fcell embarked on an ambitious project in 1890:<strong> the Colonia G\u00fcell<\/strong>, an urban nucleus, which was at that time quite far from Barcelona, with a<strong>n industrial estate, houses for its workers and social facilities<\/strong> with a place of worship.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To start with, a chapel was used for this purpose, but it soon became too small and <strong>Gaud\u00ed was commissioned to construct a church<\/strong> in 1898. The building work, however, did not commence until ten years later, due to the time it took the architect to study the daring structural as well as experimental solutions that it included. In fact, Gaud\u00ed used it as a laboratory of ideas for future application in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dosde.com\/en\/books\/sagrada-familia.html\">the Sagrada Familia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In this church, the architect Gaud\u00ed created a universe of lines based on ruled geometry, using a monumental model measuring four metres high that allowed him to design the structure without having to do a single calculation and it was <strong>inspired, for the first time in the history of architecture, by living beings. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Remaining loyal to his tendency to include symbolism, Gaud\u00ed projected the temple on a hill overlooking the landscape in order to symbolise the passing from an earthly to celestial plane. In 1914, G\u00fcell became ill and handed over the management of the estate to his children, whose lack of interest in the project led to Gaud\u00ed\u2019s resignation when construction had only just got off the ground.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dosde.com\/en\/books\/antoni-gaudi.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3643\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Boton-descubrir-mas-EN.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>A robust and dynamic exterior<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/paniramica-Cripta-Gu%CC%88ell-colonia-guell-gaudi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-650 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/qa-dosde.qamoon.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/paniramica-Cripta-Gu%CC%88ell-colonia-guell-gaudi.jpg\" alt=\"Overview G\u00fcell Crypt, by Antoni Gaud\u00ed\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Because the G\u00fcell Crypt&rsquo;s fa\u00e7ades were not load-bearing walls (the columns and arches supported the entire weight of the building) Antoni Gaud\u00ed was able to freely express himself and planned the the fa\u00e7ade walls to have an enclosing wall with pronounced recesses and projections that generated organic forms in tune with the structure of the inside of the crypt.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The large windows of oval, hexagonal and pentagonal forms that are scattered throughout the perimeter, along with the irregularly positioned bricks and the dark stones that decorate the entire fa\u00e7ade, give the work<strong> a rustic air expressly sought for by the architect in order that the building would perfectly blend in with its surroundings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The G\u00fcell Crypt interior<\/h2>\n<p>[metaslider id=1276]<\/p>\n<p>Gaud\u00ed planned the ground plan of the crypt to be of oval shape and divided it into three areas (defined by the uneven land) for different uses: nave, choir and private rooms. Four columns of basaltic stone, which withstand heavier loads, delimited a central space surrounded by a semi-circle of nine brick pillars.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to this structure, Gaud\u00ed could use <strong>an open plan design, which allowed a clear view of the altar from any angle<\/strong>. The only areas that were off limits to the congregation were the private rooms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>A complete book with all Gaud\u00ed&rsquo;s works<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Antoni Gaud\u00ed was considered one of the most important architects in history<\/strong>.
